What Is Malawi Cane Furniture Made From?

2. Preparing the Cane

3. Building the Frame
The furniture frame is assembled first. Skilled craftsmen shape the bamboo or cane into
curved forms using simple hand tools and traditional techniques.
The joints are carefully secured to provide both strength and flexibility.
4. Hand Weaving
This is where each piece truly comes to life.
Using intricate weaving patterns, artisans create seats, backs, and decorative panels by hand.
The weaving must be tight enough for strength while remaining comfortable and visually balanced.
Experienced weavers develop an intuitive sense of tension and symmetry that cannot easily
be replicated by machines.
5. Finishing
Finally, the furniture is sanded and inspected before receiving a natural finish or protective
coating that enhances the beauty of the material while improving durability.
